The Church of

San Sisinio

The Reina Organ

In 1768 Antonio Reina of Como built a magnificent instrument for the Church. The organ was restored in 1822,by Biroldi of Varese, again in 1919 lightning struck it and ruined several pipes. Don Carlo Grassi , prior of the church had a manual bellow  and a new pedal board installed in the organ. Finally in 1974 and 1998 Maestro Livio Vanoni made a complete restoration of it using only its original pieces. He replaced the manual bellow with an electric one.

Chiesa di San Sisinio, l'organo del Reina

In the past, particularly in Italy organs were not played using all the tonalities since this meant higher costs, need of more room and taller pipes, therefore the key and pedal boards were reduced thus the octaves were also reduced.. Musicologist Leo Katriner from Freiburg wrote in the “List of Ticino’s Ancient Organs”:

"The organ in the Church of San Sisinio has a remarkable sound transparency in regard to larger organs. Which make it difficult to distinguish between one note and the other. Smaller organs such as this one have an exceptional clearness and single notes are easily heard, therefore they are suitable to play rapid passages, trills and embellishments".
